Hello All,
It has been awhile since I sat down at a NLHE table and am contemplating
going down to the casino today to give it a whirl. I just got a check for
overpayment on my hazard insurance and have a little extra to spend in the
case I lose. I am sick of playing 3-6LHE and having a drop of 7.00! I
guess the NLHE tables at Greektown have changed to a raked pot as opposed
to time charge so I feel a little better about playing that structure. (I
just do not like the time charge with such a small starting stack)
They are typical 1-2NLE tables I think 100-200 games. I have no idea how
the tables play because it has been a year or so since I have played NLHE
in a casino and it was a different casino anyway.
I think I am just going to play like a rock because I do not have the time
to be tricky. I may only get 3-4 hours of playing time in which sucks
because when I play marathons I do well and when my time is limited
sometimes I go for the big score because of the juice. Oh well. I will
have to deal with that aspect of it.
Any other ideas besides someone saying they will take my money, take me
around back and kick me in the nuts and call it a day?

IIRC, Greektown spreads 40-100 and 100-300 1-2NLHE games. Maybe 100-200
for the higher one, as it has been about a year since I was last there.
My experience from Greektown has been that the game plays loose and wild.
Lots of straddles, which lead to $20 first raises with two face cards.
Playing rock-ish in that game will be boring - especially if you only have
a few hours. I would just try to see lots of flops in position with
speculative hands - when you hit an overpair, or even AK/AQ/AJ will pay
you off.

Playing speculative hands at a high rake casino when people are making it
$20 with 2 face cards is a recipe for quick bankroll loss.
Spazzo might be prepping for a boring night, but he has the best strategy
nearly down.

Well, I did say cheap flops - the straddle/$20 raise would not qualify.

I read it again, and I think that you neglected to say that.

I read it again too, and indeed you are correct sir. I meant to have the
word "cheap" in there - does that count?

Yes just mail half of your intended loss to the poker room manager. It is
a great deal for both of you!!

There are worse things you could do than play ultra tight. In my limited
experience playing 1/2-1/3 live NLHE better than half of your opponents
will be dead money and may not even notice your tightness making it more
likely you get paid when you catch a hand. Try to see flops with non
premium pockets... Wait a second. A $7 rake? WTF. Can that even be
beat with stacks averaging $100? Play real tight.

John... I had folks living in Novi until earlier this year and have
played at Greek Town about 4x a year for last few years at these
tables. Quickest, simplest advice given your circumstances (time,
etc.): PLAY SOLID, no fancy moves... as I've found the typical player
here is better than average. Try to TRAP, as players here tend to pay
you off (particularly the younger ones).
Fwiw, I've done really well at GT and I gotta say the people I've met
there are *really* good folk.

Here's an idea. Put it in the bank, buy a cd. Save it. Do you have any
money saved up for a rainy day? At least a few thousand? Or do you just
run down to the casino as soon as you get a couple hundred bucks in your
hand?

The best diversion to playing super tight is talking a lot. The more
you talk, the less players realize you're folding. You are correct on
your post.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I ended up going down and sitting at a
100-200/ 1-2NLHE table for about 20 minutes until I couldn't find the
sucker and got up. lol
I did end up sitting in a 3-6LHE game and got my ass handed to me for
about the 13th straight session. I played pretty damn tight too. Not as
tight as say folding A-Jo, but I folded plenty of A-9o and K-J and 22 OOP
etc. I usually mix my game up in LHE, but this time decided to rock it
and ended up going about 5 hours losing 3 BIG pots with a full house over
bigger full house, set over set and being VERY aggressive with a nut flush
draw that missed and I payed off a ladies straight up to the river when I
missed and had to muck to a 6 raise with about 80.00 in the pot with the K
high. She showed though and I already KNEW she had it. I four flushed
the flop.
Oh well. My GF ended up showing up later also and broke even and in fact
is on her way down now to try and make a quick 60.00 to get her hair did.
Thanks again for all the advise and even Russ had a pleasant response. I
am about 20 pages into the book.

Sounds like here (Florida). With a cap of $100 buy-in, the games are
hysterical.
I usually don't play them since they're the definition of bingo, but
the other day I busted out of a tourney in short order, so decided to
sit down at a table for a while.
At a 2/3 table, the average raise was $15 to $20. One guy was
consistently raising to $30 PF, and getting callers, although he re-
loaded I think 4 times in 30 minutes. (Keep in mind that this is with
$100 stacks.)
I saw calls of all in re-raises with 6-4 off (ok, nothing wrong with
THAT ), 10-Q, 4-4, and 6-7 off. If someone had 2 overs on the flop,
odds are it was all going in if necessary. In two hours, I saw ONE
hand without a flop, and that was limp, limp, limp, raise to $240
(into a pot of $14), fold, fold, fold.
Playing tight in those games is ok because you only need two or three
hands to hold up and you've made 75-100BB profit. All you had to do
was flop top pair, check to the PF raiser, who would go all-in like
clockwork, and then call him.
Plus, if you can't be amused watching someone make a 20X pot bet
preflop, you really need to try harder.
