Post subject: A Dozen Newbie Questions...Please Help!!!!
Archived from groups: rec>gambling>poker (more info?)

Hi. I am new to poker and new to RGP. I have about a dozen questions
I am hoping you can answer for me. I am sure they have never been
asked before:

1) Who is Russ Georgiev, and why is his spaghetti sauce so damn tasty?

2) My credit card was declined when I tried to register online. Why
don't these sites offer an alternative way to fund an account?

3) My social security number is 098-45-7129. My mother's maiden name
is Smith. My birthday is 7/02/87. My password is Fish. Why do these
sites need this information? Isn't it dangerous to give it out?

4) How much should I raise with 2h3h in ep? What about when the flop
comes Ac Kc Qc? How do I bet so I don't scare away the fish in case I
hit my straight draw?

5) Why do so many people fold before a flop hits? Don't they know
that you might be throwing away the winning hand?

6) What are pot odds and how do I get them?

7) I have lost 3 times with AA in my hand. Are the sites rigged? How
come whenever I hit a flush draw on the flop I lose 2/3rds of the
time? I play with my college friends at Duke and never lose. I went
to play the $100/200 game on stars and lost my entire bankroll when I
had to post the Big Blind upon entering. I lost and it must be
rigged.

Cool I played for 15 minutes at the 1/2 game and was up $1,200. I
later lost it all in 10 minutes playing 2/4. Are the 2/4 players
really that much better?

9) I'm a pinko-neo-natzi bush-hating republican vegan. I was so sick
of all the OT Poker-related posts in rec.politics, so I came here. Are
there ever any off topic posts in this forum?

10) I love the World Poker Tour. How come Vince Van Patten doesn't
play in these games? He is obviously one of the best poker players
who ever lived. Are they afraid that if he plays then other players
will simple skip the tournament?

11) How much do I tip the online dealers?

12) Can I borrow some money?

Never, never, never give out your password. The other items you had no control
of so don't sweat that stuff. Your password, that's your own creation and gives
an insight to your soul; so guard it accordingly.

You don't want to know.

You can send cash to a drop box in Costa Rica. Check their website.

So they can clean out your bank account when you least expect it.

Yes

Don't raise...go for the check raise

Some people still believe playing tight will help you win. That's what
makes the games so profitable.

Again, you must send money to a drop box in Costa Rica. (Allow 4-6
weeks for delivery)

This is what is known as "anecdotal evidence". Please post your last
300,000 hand histories so we can rip your stupid theories to shreds.

Yes, they are twice as good. I will let Sklansky explain the math to
you.

Not really. You do get the odd post about masturbation, butt-wiping
tequniques, splooging, etc etc, but nothing really out of the
ordinary.

I agree,Vince is probably the best player to have never won a
bracelet. But I hope he doesn't decide to play... I probably learn
more listening to his comments than I would watching him.

> 11) How much do I tip the online dealers?

Why would you want to tip a dealer?

What's your story?

I'm no expert, but I'll take a stab at answering your questions my newbie
friend:
> 1) Who is Russ Georgiev, and why is his spaghetti sauce so damn tasty?
Depends which Russ you're talking about. At last count I believe there
are 6 of them now. The secret to his spaghetti sauce is to saute the
garlic and THEN REMOVE IT FROM THE PAN

Didn't finish. Sorry.

> 2) My credit card was declined when I tried to register online. Why
> don't these sites offer an alternative way to fund an account?

Give the me the credit card number, expiration date, CVV2 code, and the
name exactly as it appears on the card and I'll find a site you can use it
at.

> 3) My social security number is 098-45-7129. My mother's maiden name
> is Smith. My birthday is 7/02/87. My password is Fish. Why do these

Don't give this information to the poker minions. They are trying to rule
the world.

>

By most accounts this is a very strong hand (some would say a "dream
hand"). They don't come along like this very often so I would play it
fast and hard. Get as much money in the pot as possible when you have the
"best of it".

> 5) Why do so many people fold before a flop hits? Don't they know
> that you might be throwing away the winning hand?

I know what you mean. I think its because too many people play for
recreational purposes only with no real knowledge of the fundamentals of
winning play. I see morons routinely muck 72o in MP...not knowing how
strong their chances are to hit 772 on the flop.

> 6) What are pot odds and how do I get them?

Odds that you will win the pot. My current pot odds for the 10/20 game
are 65%, but I'm working on improving that number.

> 7) I have lost 3 times with AA in my hand. Are the sites rigged? How

Yes they are rigged. Play home games with people you know only.

> Cool I played for 15 minutes at the 1/2 game and was up $1,200. I
> later lost it all in 10 minutes playing 2/4. Are the 2/4 players
> really that much better?

Yes once you make the jump to 2/4 you have to realize that its a whole
different ball game. These people have mortgages to pay and children to
feed. They're not there to fuck around and toss chips back and forth.
They are there for the money. Also you have to realize that $1,200 at the
1/2 in fifteen minutes isn't much. In my opinion you're not capable of
beating this game yet. Double that would be about right. Your BB/hour is
horrible and I would stick 1/2 for a while.

Do a search for "Bushies" or "Canadians suck".

Mainly because of his contractual obligations to both The Travel Channel
and the WPT.

> 11) How much do I tip the online dealers?

Try to keep it consistent with what you're used to at the B&M games.

> 12) Can I borrow some money?

Yes. You seem to have a firm grasp of the game and I am interested in
backing you 100% at the 1/2. At the 2/4 though I don't think I can afford
that type of risk right now.
