Lately, I've been playing NL occasionally. Yesterday at the 200NL at
Commerce, I flopped the nuts when I held QJ on the button and the
board was A, K, 10. There were about 6 people in the pot for the
minimum $5. All checked to me and I bet $20. The small blind called
and I knew he had at least a pair of aces. The turn was another ace
and he checked. I bet $100 and he called. Then I knew he had three
aces, but no full house.
I prayed the board wouldn't pair or he'd hit his kicker. The river was
a 6. He checked and I went all-in for about $150. He hesitated for a
long time and studied me for several long seconds. I gave off no
visible signs of nervousness because, due to the beta blocker I take
for my high blood pressure, I felt absulutely no emotion or excitement.
Anyway, he finally called and I won a nice pot.
In fact, I don't feel emotion or excitement when I play limit poker
either, but the advantage isn't as great as it is in NL. This is
making me think that maybe I should play NL more.
Have any of you had similar experiences or comments you'd like to add?
Thanks,

I would think this would be a real bummer to ones sex life/relationship.
Before you go off on me, I have been married 35 years and having a great
poker game would be more important at this stage in life.

I also take high blood pressure drug, beta blocker, but it doesn't work
for me in poker. I still show emotions, like shaky hands when holding a
monster hand. Double rum on the rocks works perfectly well for me
though. >> Stay informed about: How Drug Pressure Drug Helped Me Win |

Barbara, I take TWO BP meds (metaprolol and lisinopril) and one anti-anxiety
drug (xanax) and I have found that not only do they help with emotions at
the poker table, they help me to be much more patient when playing NL. My
pulse rate before I was taking these prescribed drugs was always VERY high
(avg 104) even back when I was in football condition, now my pulse rate
avg's 79.

Beta blockers are pretty easy on the wood if I recall, besides at our age
if you aren't vitamin V dependent, you are missing out on a bunch of
fucking, excuse my crudeness. But if your wife finds out what it does she
is going to insist on a dispenser in the bathroom. And its not just for
guys that are clinically erectile dysfunctional, i still pop independent
boners all the time, but it gives you that stamina of youth, strong like
bull and all that.

My blood pressure is fine, just get back to me in a few years when the
little head just ain't what it used to be, no matter what the big head
wants it to do. You'll be on the streets begging $ with a card board sign
to get your next Viagra hook up.

Ya know, someday, just ONE TIME I'd like *not* to hear how getting into a
gym is the answer. For all of you healthy skinny people that's just fine.
I have had serious injuries that prevent me from doing ANY excersise with
the exception of short walks and swimming. It hasn't been this way my whole
life. When I played ball I was 6'1" 222 with 6% body fat. I hold the leg
press, squat, and shot put records from my high school and now can barely
get out of bed some days. I wonder how much the speed and steroids my
coaches pushed on me have to do with my current state?
Now I'm not saying that I didn't bring some of the problems on myself, for
instance, I'm still a 2.5 pack a day smoker, but when you aren't able to
participate in sports or even working out and that was your complete way of
life for the first 24 years, IT SUCKS!!!
BTW, my cousin (look him up on google) Derek Monell lives in Hawaii and
still competes in IRONMAN events, but guess what? He and his father (who
has always run marathons) have HIGH BP. Sometimes it's genetic.

Just curious: why would some one go with Viagra (4 hour window) instead
of Cialis (24 hour window). Even allowing for marketing hype, isn't
Cialis the better choice?

As you and I have discussed before, I also take MScontin (morphine) and
Hydrcodone (Lortab) for the chronic pain of two botched hernia surgeries and
hip displasia (sp?) along with 4 bad, gone or bulging discs in my lower
back, so I can relate. No Methandone, although the two times I tried Heroin
when I was a kid, I did like it, Those may also be having something to do
with my patience level

Exactly. I've been single for many years, had a lot of fun earlier in
my life, and sex would only be an unwelcome distraction at this point.
On the other hand, winning at poker is a lot of fun.

I like poker, but I can't imagine a stage in my life when sex will
become an unwelcome distraction. On the other hand, if I can actually
win at poker....

I've often wondered if professional/serious-amateur poker players take
beta-blockers; in one of my other hobbies -- golf -- there's been a big
controversy about them for years, with many pros allegedly taking them
without medical justification just to get the calming effect over
crucial putts. One golf pro who did take them medicinally -- Nick
Price, who has hyptertension -- got off them and onto another
medication because he couldn't get a rush of adrenalin when he needed
it, such as when he was between clubs and wanted to clobber the shorter
one. Of course, that's not a problem in poker, but there's
confirmation from another game that beta-blockers do noticeably calm
you. >> Stay informed about: How Drug Pressure Drug Helped Me Win |
