I'm a long-time home player and online player but never played in a casino
before. I'll be in Atlantic city this coming weekend and want to sit down
and play a bit of Hold 'Em. With that in mind, I have a couple of questions:

1. Can anyone recommend a casino there to play in and why?
2. Any advice for someone in my position? Long-time player but new to
casinos?
3. Anything special I should know from an etiquette perspective?

Any help or advice you could give would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The Borgata will be the most comfortable and the most
welcoming. The Taj is also worth a look for it's large size.

2. Any advice for someone in my position? Long-time player but new to

2/4 and even 3/6 are no fold'em. If that's not to your
taste, you'll have to play 5/10 (6/12 at the Borgata) or higher.

3. Anything special I should know from an etiquette perspective?
Tip the dealers a buck or so per hand. Try to keep your
play peppy. Slow players are getting to be a real drag. If you are
going to dinner, put yourself on the dinner list and you'll get the
first open seat when you return. A lot of players just leave their
stacks at the table to hold their seat, and can be gone almost an hour
and a half before the floor 'picks them up,' removes them from the
table. It hurts the game and really ticks people off.

If you're scooting around town, try Little Saigon Restuarant on Artic
& Iowa, not far from the Trop.

I've played in AC many times. The three places to play hold'em are the
Tropicana, Taj Mahal, and the Borgata. The three places have slightly
different limits in the low-limit games. Taj has 3/6 and 5/10. Trop 2/4,
4/8 and 7.5/15 and the Borgata 3/6 and 6/12. Taj and Borgata also have some
mid-limit games (10/20, 15/30 and 20/40). If you want to play 50/100 or
higher your only choice pretty much is the Taj although Borgata may have a
game. If you want to play pot limit, Borgata usually has a game on
weekends. Trop used to have a game, but I am not sure if it still goes
since Borgata opened. Trop is the only place with regular tournaments. Of
the three rooms, Taj is the biggest although a little grungy. Borgata is
the newest and maybe the nicest. Trop is also pretty nice, but their
business has been hurt a little since Borgata opened. If you have time I
would check out all three.

Regarding etiquette, you'll find that the casino game is usually faster than
the home game so be ready to act when it is your turn. Also, do not act out
of turn. If you are going to raise it is best to say "raise". String
raises are not allowed. (a string raise is a raise where you call first,
hesitate and then raise). Do not throw your chips into the pot. Instead
place them in front of you and the dealer will collect them (this ensures
everyone puts in the proper amount). Do not slow roll (this means when it
is your turn at show down, show your hand instead of waiting for everyone
else to show first. Generally, the bettor shows first and then clockwise
from there.) When you do reach the showdown always show both cards even if
only one plays (for example, if the board is AKQJ and you hold a ten you
should show both cards).

One piece of advice. Protect your hand at all times. Handle your cards so
the players next to you cannot see your hand. If you reach a showdown and
think you lost, make sure you see your opponents cards, don't go by what the
player announces (sometimes players or dealers misread the hand, rarely,
players deliberately miscall their hand). When you think you have won the
hand, don't release your hand to the dealer until he is pushing you the pot.
If you think you have won, and everone else has thrown in their hands and
then you throw in your hand, if another player actually still does have a
hand, that player may be awarded the pot. If there is any problem, usually
it is best to call the floor and get a ruling. If you are in the seat next
to the dealer, it is a good idea to put a chip or some other token on top of
your cards, otherwise the dealer may inadvertantly muck your hand.

Hope this helps.

If you play 5/10, then you want to play 6/12 instead. Same $4 rake & more
money in each pot. If you play 3/6, the young guys with the booze in their
blood is what you're aiming for. If you want a comfortable chair. If you
want to be able to see a tv from wherever you sit. If you want the best
snack bar. If you want the prettiest waitresses. If you want the cleanest
room with the cleanest chips. Put on a collar and go to the Borgata.

Best regards,
Ken

Borgata IMO is a bit easier than Taj or Trop. More action, less
experienced, more spending power. I would play 2/4 or 3/6 and play
according to the game. Tight agressive players usually win, but variance
can be wide. get a red or black comp card as soon as you arrive. Trop
has 7.50/15 which is a shoot out

The 5/10 stud and 10/20 are nice, but the 10/20 often breaks. Lots of
action in the Borgata 1-5 game. Lots of very bad players who raise and
call with nothing. I call it room of the straight chasers.

Agree... with Lone Ranger. Play tightly at first to see how the game
goes. At Borgata, there are lots of breaks of the rules by dealers.

Agree again. Beware of the young punks on SAt night. However, I love to
take their money

Also agree....pretty good place. For lunch on weekday or Saturday try
Spanky and Son on Porter and Trenton Ave in Chelsea Heights a few blocks
from the Sand Castle Stadium next to Kerbeck Car Showroom. It is head
and shoulders above The once great White House.

Nice wather this week/weekend. Hope you have anice time

I must be honest though..........the poker room coffee is really freakin
weak. You have got to go to Starbucks or order the tea and have them leave
the bag in it. AND don't ask for sugar.........they do not know what "a
little sugar" means. Get it with a lemon.

I sent you an email to the address on your header but it's the wrong
address. Hmmmm, now that's poor etiquette.

The Borgata is new, clean and less stressful than the Trop or Taj. The
staff is usually more helpful. The other joints have their positives
but overall the Borgata is best for new holdem experiences.

You should start with the 2/4 games which tend to be less aggressive
although on the weekend anything can happen.

If you're very experienced with internet holdem and don't mind risking
$500 you should consider the 6/12 holdem which is a relatively soft
game at the Borgata. In either case, keep in mind that table selection
is very important so if you become "uncomfortable" at any table let
the floorperson know you'd like a table change and/or get on lists for
other limits.

When you get on the sign up list, tell the person taking your name
you're new to that poker room and then tell the floorperson the same
thing. They should be more helpful at that point. Also, tell the
dealers you are kinda new and they will do what they can to help.
Otherwise all personnel and players will assume you know what you're
doing and let you make all the mistakes most of us have made. If you
ask for help there will always be at least a few people happy to guide
you through it. Obviously you know poker but they will help you with
getting a player's card for comps, using the wait lists, buying chips,
seating, moving to other tables, et al. The players will keep you
sharp on etiquette and some of their advice will be true. Most of it
you will figure out quickly from watching and learning the differences
in casino poker.

Sure. Play the Trop. Don't play the Taj, because they built over the last
remaining Taylor Pork Roll stand in AC. The Borgata is a nice looking
place, but you can't walk out the door and gape at the ocean when some scum
bucket cracks your rockets.

> 2. Any advice for someone in my position? Long-time player but new to

Enjoy yourself. If you have a bad beat or two, go out and take a walk by
the water or get a drink and listen to the lounge acts. The bartender in
the back of the Trop, near the poker room has a great voice, and they
usually have a good Motown act later on at night. The point is, it's your
first time out. Pay attention to folks, and how they play. Don't bet the
mortgage. Just have a good time.

> 3. Anything special I should know from an etiquette perspective?

Don't pick your nose while handling chips. If you've been blasting some
really smelly farts, take em out by the slots. Don't string raise, don't
take chips off the table, and if you have any questions, ask the dealer.

Couple of things to add: if you're at Borgata, don't rely on the floor to
fill openings at the tables. Find the tables you're listed for and
personally tell the podium folks about any openings. This will get fixed,
eventually. If you're at The Taj, check out the poker snack bar (elevator
behind the supervisory desk)--best greasy cheeseburgers and
grilled-cheese-with-bacon in AC. The dealers seem to be playing Borgata, so
that's the place to look for soft games at funny hours. Last I looked, the
best buffet value seemed to be Showboat (alas, no poker there).

Try the hot chocolate--it's super at both Taj and Trop (don't know about
Borgata).

putting your own, real email address undisguised in any way in a public

I don't care where you start, you'll end up at the Taj Mahal. The
reason? That is the only house with all the games all the time. Plus
you get to see real sunshine instead of being housed in a basement or
an attic (Borgata and Trop). Read my Taj post...the Borgata promises
you a free night and then gives you a bullshit story when you try to
redeem it. Also, the floor people in the poker room at the Borgata
are rabid about collecting time.

Poker Manners include:

Do not chew gum...period.

Do NOT pick your nose, even if you think you're doing it on the sly
(You're NOT!)

Do not whine when beaten, even if the beat was a huge suck out.

Do not splash the pot with your bets.

Do not bet out of turn.

Do not comment on the cards while play is in action.

Do not blame the dealer for your shit luck.

Do not eat anything messier than hard dry pretzels while playing.

Do not act like the woman with cleavage playing across from you is the
first set of tits you've ever seen.

Do not tickle her ankle with your foot and tell her it's not your
foot, but another appendage.

Do not keep smiling if your nickhane is "Lone Tooth" or "Brown Tooth".

BATHE AND USE DEODORANT!

If someone offers you a breath mint, take it. Chances are you need
it.

DO TIP THE DEALER.

Great advice....every one of those suggestions. You might even end up at
the Taj. After 2:30 am, the prostitutes are sitting near the poker
room. For some reason, poker players rteally need that "oil change"
after a tough night at the 20/40 HE.

Borgata has best drinks and food. The waitresses are really nice looking
and efficient. How about the blond with the tattoo on her left thigh.
I'd love to get a better look.

The Trop has the nicest players and people. Waitresses (with about 3
exceptions) really suck. Food is OK. Shitty parking in summer.

And the poker.....any of those 3 are OK
