$1/$2 pot-limit holdem, live game, 8-handed. Average stack size 100-200
chips. I've got about 250.

I get [As 7s] in early position. Normally I will pass with this hand but
there are five or six limpers preflop on most hands, with few raises. So
I limp and only two players limp from late position. SB folds, BB checks,
4 see the flop.

Flop comes [Ac 9s 2s]. I have top pair, bad kicker, with the nut
four-flush. I bet the pot (about $9), the button calls, BB calls. Pot is
$27.

Turn comes [Ac 9s 2s 6d]. I didn't like getting 2 callers but I go ahead
and pot it again, $27. Button folds. Big blind calls the $27 and raises
another $40 on top. He's only got another $50 or so left in his stack
after the raise.

I put him on two pair or a set (maybe AK?). Whatever I put him on, I feel
like I need an ace or spade on the river to win. I figure, that's 9
spades plus 2 aces, 11 outs. So I've got 35 to 11 against making my hand
on the next card, or about 3.2 to 1 against. The pot is laying me 120 to
40, or about 3 to 1, so I fold, because even when I do make my hand, I'm
only going to be able to sell it for another $20 or at most $50. We asked
the dealer to peel off another card and a 9 came on the river. The BB
showed me A6.

So I'm thinking that folding in that spot was a pretty gutless play. What
do you think?

I think you're a pot-limit FISH.

you put him on 2 pair and folded. you were right. just because you would of
rivered him doesnt always mean you made a bad play. playing that hand in
early position is a hard spot though. I hate having weak aces up front. you
either win the antes or maybe a flop bet to folds on the turn, or you lose
alot. I don't know thats its worth playing this hand in a full game in early
position. even if people are limping. also the more limpers the more you
have no idea what they have. its dangerous.

seeing the flop with a marginal hand and then flopping a draw in big bet
poker is the best way to learn not to play crap up front. it gets expensive

I think you made a rookie pot limit mistake, always betting the pot. In
this situation I would make a feeler type bet on the flop say 3-5, or
check and pray someone pots it so i can come over the top. Even more
important in pot limit than limit is properly using a check raise.

From late position limping in tells me he doesn't have a big ace or he
would have raised, you limped from early position and should represent a
big ace here.

if you make a 3-5 bet on the flop and get 2 callers with no raise, you
can check the turn which should look very suspicious to your opponents,
and if he does pot it you are only calling $24, assuming a $5 bet on the
flop, or my play would be to come over the top for $48.

by the way the big blind check raised you on the turn, my question is
why didn't you check considering you said you didn't like two callers,
and would more than likely get a free card?
