Tomorrow I am playing the 600$ limit hold'em tournament at Foxwoods.
I've played limit ring games and hlhe tournaments of course, but never
a live limit tournament. Any advice or ideas?

Does anyone know what mistakes are frequently made when applying
normal ring game strategy to these events?

The only suggestion I have is don't call the turn if you're not going to
call the river.

Don't try to steal blinds in the early rounds, it's not worth it and almost
everyone calls anyways. In later rounds, it's easier to steal....like when it
gets to 100/200 blinds and up.

People play LHE tournies terribly, and make far worse mistakes than they
do in NL tournies.

Your basic strategy should be to develop a squeaky tight image early
(especially if your table is late on the list of those to be broken (good
info to find out). As the limits get high, you really have to switch on
the aggression, as people will now make the mistake of folding far too
many hands and conceding too many pots to your aggression, even folding
for a single check-raise on the flop, for example. Pots are going to very
rarely be more than HU after the middle stages, and you have to both be
able to aggressively take down pots without a showdown, as well as folding
early when you are beaten, and avoiding calling down with draws.

Conversely, there are times when you will have to take a chance an check
and call an aggressive player down who will fire three bullets. I've won
more than my share of pots with AK high or a middle pair because I didn't
believe that my opponent would be playing a hand with a Jack in it, for
example. This aspect of it takes a lot more hand reading skills and
experience, but is cruical in order to win these tournaments.

Position is king. Play very few pots OOP.

Don't draw passively.

Exactly. If you're drawing, you should be raising the turn. You may not
have to draw and scoop it right there.

Perfect poker theory. Limit poker at the casinos/cardrooms I've played
at your raise is likely to get capped and your busted flush draw gets
very expensive indeed.

The first thing you notice about LHE tournaments is that players are
generally very snug. A bet into the pot by a player after the flop usually
means they have a stronger hand than in a ring game.

Try to be a bit careful with your starting hands, and try to fit the flop
somehow before deciding to continue. But if you do fit the flop, tend to
drive bet it the entire way, keeping control by re-raising if you have to
against action players, and folding if against nut players. Hopefully, you
have some sort of information to go on to tell the difference.

So, I'm saying to be careful before committing, but when you do find a hand
to commit to, back it the entire way if no one challenges you. If you are
challenged, it's paramount that you evaluate the situation correctly.

Also, be on the look out for players who will definitely bet if you check,
and set them up to bet for you.

Often true, but people play limit tournaments very snugly and will
frequently give up on hands like top pair, top kicker if faced with a big
raise on the turn. Tournaments play differently because of this overly
cautious approach that people take.

Um... we are not talking about limit poker cash games.

I busted 30 out of 179. I ran good but played pretty sloppy.

squeaky tight image would have been nice. They were quite nitty. But
you could not get them to lay down a pair. Trip report to follow.
