Hello. Just subscribed to this group.
Could anyone point me out to some hints, tips, websites as to play/
learn, as a total beginner or close to, for tables of 6 (and not 10),
and very very low cash games ? I'm not here to win or lose money, I'd
just like to learn, avoiding the classical beginners errors, try to
learn from my mistakes, etc.

Thanks a lot.

Off the top of my head:
- #1: get on the play money side of the sites first - don't risk any real
$$'s until you have a lot of hands under your belt and the mechanics
become second nature
- #2: play full tables, not 6-handed - on 6-handed tables you're forced
to make more decisions just to stay ahead of the blinds/rake, and early
on, this will just lead you to get frustrated - play the full tables so
you learn how to fold/fold/fold - only once you're 100% sure you have an
edge at any given level should you try the 6-handed tables
- #3: find a hand chart (like Phil Gordon's) and stick to it; once you
reach the point that you can play the chart w/o having to lookup every
hand, then try to expand your range of hands on your own - but going with
the hand chart will be a good way to get a feel for how your options
change as your position improved on the table
- #4: find a post by DG777 - burn that sad excuse for posting into your
brain, so that you don't play above your head and end up like him

Good luck
D

I'd say the opposite. Start at the smallest real cash stakes you can find.
You won't learn anything from play money but bad habits. Don't do any
play money at all except to learn the mechanics of it and for pure
amusement if for some reason you find it amusing. The exception is
very high level play money tables where people take it somewhat
seriously, but you won't get to those right away.

You can find microstakes games where people play for real, and while
the games are relatively soft, you will find tough opponents even there.
Just don't expect to take anyone out of their comfort level with big
raises and other such moves.

I like Fox's matrix, but not much else about Mastering No-Limit Hold'em.
And you should eventually abandon starting hand charts. But they're a good
place to start to stay out of trouble.

If you ever find yourself posting to groups begging for a $4.40 stake, quit
poker immediately. That or shoot yourself.
