The local poker room has implemented a new procedure in their tournaments and
I'll give two examples:
#1 The daily $40 No Rake (on non-racing days and there 20 racing days left this
year) tournaments are limtited to 50 players and are a Sell Out each day. For
this $40 you get $2,000 in chips with 10 min. blind levels. They pay the final
five players and winners are expected to tip the dealers out of their winnings.
Most (myself included) tip 10% to the dealer if we cash.
Now, during the 1st blind level, you may pay $5 and receive another $1,000 in
chips, but the $5 goes to the dealers and not into the pool.
#2 The afternoon tournaments (for this example) cost $65 and ARE raked. You
receive $3,000 in chips with no add ons or re-buys and 20 minute blind levels.
The field is not limited to the number of players and may get from 30-60 players
on non-racing days (and maybe more on racing days. This tournament also has the
$5 for an additional $1,000 in chips, which goes to the dealers. This tournament
also pays the final five players.
There are other types of tournaments during the week that have this same option.
I'm not whining about the $5 going to the dealers (I like the dealers and I take
the $5 option), but I'm curious if anyone here has encountered this scenario in
their local tournaments or in any casinos throughout the States and what you
think of this new procedure. The dealers rotate 30 minute downs and as the
tournament tables dwindle, they return to the cash tables. Is this $5 for
dealers for extra chips something that has been around and is only now reaching
our local rooms ?
just curious,
Max Culpa

The "dealer add-on" is quite common in Vegas, and is a way to ensure that
dealers will actually deal tournamnets. The problem is that a good dealer
can easily make $30 an hour dealing 2/4 or 3/6 LHE, and in tournaments
relying on tips from players, those dealer tips would plummet to about
$10/hr. So either they would have to put the worst, break-in dealers on
the tourney tables, piss off the staff by making them deal tournies
(which, in Vegas, is a good way to get your good dealers to go looking for
another room), or this option.
A 50 player turbo structure takes about 3 hours to play out. There are 5
tables to start, down to 3 tables, by hour 2, and final table for hour 3,
basically losing a table per dealer down.
So there are 5+4+3+2+1+1 dealer downs in the tourney, or 16. $250 from
the dealer add-on/16 is $15.62 per down or $30/hour, plus any amounts that
are tipped by the winners.
Because tournament play became popular with the WPT/WSOP, rooms had to
create new solutions to adequately compensate their dealing staff.

Or there's the European solution. Pay dealers a proper wage, pay the better
ones more, lose the bad ones and abandon the tips.

Or the Canadian solution, where the dealer's share the tip pool from
everyone, including the slot department, and everybody gets subsidized to
perform with stunning mediocrity!

Yeah well you missed the part where I was delivering pizzas. This is
better. The army was better still. More to follow.

The Golden Nugget Sunday tournament does the same thing. (At least it did
two years ago when I played it.)
