Actually I am a chess player, well about once a year now, I still have
a FIDE rating. There is luck in chess too but a lot less although you
can still lose an overwhelming position with one bad move, but at poker
some people seem to win because they play like total morons. A guy who
draws to 8-3 suited in a multiway pot for example, not whining just
correcting the wrong impression about poker being a game where skill
matters.

Skill does matter, it's just that the short-term luck factor is very
high in most forms of poker. That's what makes poker so profitable -
the bad players can win some of the time, and it keeps them coming
back. Deep money no-limit and pot-limit cash games have the lowest
luck factor of any form of poker - if you want to minimize (you can't
eliminate it or there wouldn't be a game) luck, stick to those and
avoid tournaments, limit poker, and capped buy-in NL/PL games. Sure
some idiot can suck out on you one or twice when you are a 80%, 90% or
95% favorite, but if you have those situations ten times or a hundred
times, you are virtually certain to come out way ahead.

As a scholastic champion chess player who realizes that there are no
dice rolls, randomness, or any factor of luck whatsoever in chess
(since even pairings don't matter in the long run, since tournaments
are usually Swiss, and you have to beat the best to become the best
eventually) allow me to say:

Back to your cave, troll! He-yah! -whipcrack- He-yah! The sun will turn
you to stone!

No one is as good as they perceive themselves to be.

Of course there's some skill...more experience than actual skill.
Tournaments..It's easy to weed out the donks. Final table, luck rules.
Cash games..Ivey and the Brunsons are playing other Iveys and Brunsons.
Comparable skill, luck wins the day.

Very good, I have been missing that way of explaining it. I am on a
mission to understand the value of skill in poker. I once thought that
through book knowledge and experience I would net skill that would enable
me to win consistently. The last 12 months have proved me wrong. I
actually won more before I learned to play better. Granted, we are
talking low levels and that may account for everything.

I can grind it out with the best of them, but a succession of donkey turds
can put me into a pretty good tail spin that results in losses exceeding
my meager wins through grinding. The playing field has become too level
and the donks are taking too big of a cut. I believe it is nearly
impossible to play winning poker at low to mid levels anymore without
consistently being luckier than the field.

Oh well, maybe it is just going to be a bad couple of years.
