Archived from groups: rec>gambling>poker (more info?)

I am a regular NL tournament player, but sometimes I have no concept
of what to do in a LIMIT tournament. Here are a few examples and Id
love some feedback.
I have 6200 in chips and the blinds are 600-1200. There are 43 people
left in a tournament that pays the top 27. I am currently in about
33rd place. My table is very tight at the moment, as most blind steals
do succeed....

Hand 1 - ATo 2 off the button. Its folded to me and I raise, leaving
myself with 3800 in chips. Now the SB, who has defiunitely been
playing tight preflop, reraises. I called and now have only 2600 in
chips!
The flop comes J77 and he bets out. Now in a NL tournament I dont see
such situaions because of course Id have been the one to go allin
preflop, but now here I am stuck on a flop, with probably very few
outs, and about 60% of my stack in the pot. What is one supposed to do
in such situations?

Also assuming no knowledge of a player, what is a general rule when
you raise with something like AQ in early position, get reraised and
then miss the flop (all low cards), and have half your stack in the
pot preflop. Thanks!

I will be interested in hearing what the seasoned tournament players have to
say about this. To me, it sounds like you bet into a bigger hand. You had a
legitimate hand to raise with in the seat you were in. He either had
something bigger (which I believe is the case since you said he was tight)
or, he put you on a weak hand trying to steal since the blinds are now
eating up about 30% of your stack each time around. So he figures odds are
you don't have a pair, you most like don't have a seven, so unless you have
a Jack......
He could be betting out with AK,AQ,AJ or a pair. In any event, you probably
walked into a bigger hand. After all, he did call your raise.............
I would have chalked it up to bad luck, folded, and tried to hold on.

Best regards,
Ken

This is a tough spot to be in a limit tournament. Sounds like you ran into a
very big hand or a guy using his chip stack against you. Either way, you
either commit till death on your A-10 after the flop, or you lay it down
right after the flop and hope for another hand before you get blinded off.
It's a very tough spot, I would opt for laying it down on the flop and
trying to recover.

Limit tournaments are a whole different ballgame than no limit tournaments.
POSITION is EVERYTHING! If you preflop raise in early position with aq and
miss your flop, be ready to fold it away after the flop if your post flop
bet gets raised. Limit tournaments are more less getting cards in the right
spots, and using that to your advantage.
