Post subject: A-J/K-J help.
Archived from groups: rec>gambling>poker (more info?)

Looking for help on my A-J/K-J play. I definately have leak in my game with
these hands.

Some input on how others play these hands would be very helpful. I think I
am calling too many 2-bets with A-J preflop and calling from too early a
position with both. Perhaps I am also not playing them aggressively enough
when they stand to be the best hand.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how these should play and
circumstances to look for where they are in trouble.

I do believe one often overlooked problem with these hands that is
contributing to the lack of EV for me is that you don't win much when you do
win with them. There is just so few hands that you can beat that will give
A-J/K-J any action when an A or K is on the flop.

Here are my stats over the last 12000 hands:

A-Js had 35 times, win 37.14% of flops seen, win 50% of showdowns overall
lost $45!!! - clearly I am losing too much on the hands I lose and not
winning enough on the hands I win. I am also seeing too many rivers with it.

A-Jo had 111 times, win 32.6% of flops seen, 57.1% of showdowns, overall won
$34 - pathetic.

K-Js had 30 times, won 20.7% of flops seen !?!, 33.3% of showdowns!?!
overall lost $38. Seeing way too many rivers with this. Also constantly
losing to K-Q or A-K.

K-Jo had 103 times, won 25% of flops seen, 53.5% of showdowns, won $64
overall.

These are all the more pathetic when I win money on weaker hands: including
over $250 with Q-J, $200 with J-10 and $120 with Q-10. In fact my total
winnings with A-J/K-J are less than my total winnings with J-9and Q-9!?!?
Both hands I rarely play at a full table. I am clearly doing something
wrong.

These overall winning are with overall losses subtracted.

Don't call strong raises with either, and Don't play them from early
position.

You're obviously aware of the potential for domination with AJ/KJ. Playing
either of these from early position will give you question marks thoughout
the entire hand.

I'd guess the reason why you lost more with AJ suited mt guess is that you
over-rated it; playing in early position and calling raises with it. The
suited factor helps a little but not that much.

The only way you can be reasonably sure AJ/KJ is the best hand is if you're
in late position all the aggressive players just called and all the tight
players folded.
I'd pop it for a raise so that if you flop and A you can figure if anyone
has a stronger A by betting into the big bad raiser.

Both hands have a combination of power potential and reason for caution.
Balance those requires that you be attentive of you opponents.

Good Luck

Specific discussion and advice about KJ: look at current CardPlayer article by
Lou K.

If you typically do not call two bets with AJo I believe you stay out of a lot
of trouble.

what program are you using to calculate these stats, and is there
somewhere I can download it?
