Folks,

I was chatting online to a friend this evening and mentioned a hand that
I've read about here in which a hand which is the nuts on the turn CANNOT
be best hand after the river.

Then I remembered I'd forgotten the answer! - and I've searched in vain
using all the keywords I can think of it.

Does anyone know where/how I can find it?

Warmest

Phil

I'd like to see that too, doesn't seem like it'd be possible...

I don't know about the original thread but here is an example of what you're
talking about in Omaha:

Board: Ah 4h 5s 10s

You hold: 2d 3d 9d 9c

Any pairing card makes quads the nuts. Any non-pairing card makes a higher
straight or, if its a nine a flush.

I vaguely remember this post, not well enough to Google for it. It was
a combination of low cards in the pocket and low cards on the board,
where the river at the very least caused the turn-nuts to chop.

You might be in trouble, Paul... er, Phil. Wink

IIRC, the hand was guaranteed to at least CHOP the pot. It wasn't
guaranteed to lose.

Speaking of bad prop bets on mathematics...

I was at the Borgata last weekend and the loudmouthed idiot 3 to my
right starts berating some guy for calling his trips against a flush to
catch a boat on the river.

LMI: "Your odds of catching that full house are only 12-1!"

Me: "No, his odds are closer to 4-1."

LMI: "No, you're wrong, they're 12-1."

Me: "You're thinking of 5-card draw, where if you draw 1 card to two
pair, your odds are 12-1. Here's he's got 4 cards on the board to pair.
9 cards give him the boat, 1 card gives him quads, 46 cards left in
the deck."

LMI: "I'll bet you $100 they're 12-1."

Me: (thinking) "Easy money, but there is just no way in hell I'm going
to prove it to the mathematically challenged such that he'll back up his
bet."

Got most of the $100 from him playing poker before he got up, anyway,
but would have loved to have come up with a Richard Feynman O-ring
explanation on the spot that would have gotten that prop bet.

If he doesn't understand that ten outs out of forty cards are a lot
better than twelve to one, you don't want to win that prop bet and get
him THINKING about poker. He probably won't learn how to play but he
might quit. You want him to keep playing. I realize that single
opponents in casino poker don't matter as much as a big fish in a
private game because you don't see them as often (except for a few
regular fish in some casinos). But, as a public service, let him BE.

Okay, this was my gift to the poker community. I expect lots of people
to buy me drinks when I show up at ATLARGE or BARGE.

How about your friend holds A7 and you hold 22. The board comes:

A A 2 7

So your buddy holds the nuts at that point of Aces full of
sevens. Of course the case deuce falls on the river accompanied by a
giant sucking sound.

I've seen this before. I think it might have been on Card Player. It
was something like what i describe below, where even though you are
ahead, any card that comes out of the deck will make someone else a
better hand.

You hold 9s-9h. Th flop comes 9c-6d-3d. Your opponents hold 4-5,
7d-8d, 6-6, 3-3, A-A, Ad-4d...plus a couple of other hands that even
if you hit quads, that card will (case 9) will give someone else a
straight flush...or something like that.... Smile
