I know I already posted a reply to this thread, but I thought about this a little more and
I have some more Popinjay Advice.
One of the most important things you can teach a kid is to not let other people take
advantage of him or her and to be fair, but not let others push them around. This is a
lesson that will guide them through life into adulthood. Because guess what, that is what
life is all about and that is what adulthood is all about. People are out to take
advantage of others who they see as weak. Teach your kids not to be weak. They don't
have to be bullies, but don't let them get bullied.

Ok, I know I have already made two posts in this thread, but I have some more thoughts on
this subject. Here's my third Popinjay Essay.
Don't look for good information on teaching children lessons of life, from a group like we
have here on RGP. Seriously, this has to be the biggest bunch of degenerates and
all-around sick fucks that has ever been assembled in cyberspace. To make a point, read
through the thread posted by Raider Fan about his thoughts on porn. Read all the
responses of people, many who are regulars on this newsgroup, and read what they all had
to say. That is just one example. Think about all the sick-ass things people in this
group have posted about. Is this who you want advice from? These people on RGP are
really frightening.

I think one of the most important things you can do for a kid is put him or her to work.
Seriously, learning good work habits early on in life is a foundation to build on. If
they grow up without good work habits, and thinking the world owes them something, they
may be in for a rude awakening when they find out the world does NOT owe them anything. I
dunno, I may sound like I'm rambling, but kids nowadays are being cheated by not
instilling discipline in them early. My two cents.

1) Be Happy and follow your heart.
I have made and lost a boat load of money in my life up to this point. (Im 41)
Having the money made me misrable but I loved making it.
2) Learn to like school get good grades.
Liking to learn is a skill that has to come from within. Its a lifes kill that
you will use forever. With the good grades to the best school you can to get to
the top of your chosen field faster. (Whether that be art school, tech school
or ivy leage college). The contacts you make in college can leapfrog you ahead
of your competition.
3) Life is a competion there are winners and losers and you will win at times an
lose at times. How you keep score is all that will change. You can measure in
tin happines, money, friends....it all epends on your values.
4) LIfe is what you make it. The freinds you choose are a reflection of you an
what you have going on in your life. You are only limited by your own
imagination, fear, will, drive or lack of it.
5) Have direction and goals. Lack of these things will get you exactly no
where.

The American philosopher Satchel Paige had some advice.
Avoid fried meats, which angry up the blood.
If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool
thoughts.
Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gently as you move.
Avoid running at all times.
Go very light on the vices, such as carrying on in society.
The social ramble ain't restful.
Age is a case of mind over matter.
If you don't mind, it don't matter.
I've said it once and I'll say it a a hundred times,
I'm forty-four years old.
Ain't no man can avoid being born average,
but there ain't no man got to be common.
Not to be cheered by praise, not to be grieved by blame, but to know
thoroughly one's own virtues or powers are the characteristics of an
excellent man.
Work like you don't need the money.
Love like you've never been hurt.
Dance like nobody's watching.
Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you. >> Stay informed about: what life skills would you teach a child today? |

1) It's only a small mistake to fold to re-raise
2) Don't fall into the trap of forming an opinion on an issue without
learning about it on your own. Hearing someone say "those <insert foreign
nationality here> are (stealing our jobs/no good/untrustworthy/great/our
friends/bad card players)" and accepting that as a basis for your own
opinions just leads to near-sighted ignorance. Ask yourself: why did they
say that? what was the motivation behind the comment? How can I find out
for myself if the statement was accurate or just a stereotype put forward
by someone who hasn't thought for themselves.
3) Learn how credit works (credit cards, mortgages, why not paying bills
can haunt you forever)

Think for themselves. Following a leader blindly will only get you into trouble.
Also teach them the balance of listening to all opinioins and then choosing the
best course of action.

1. Responsibility. Chores, school/good grades (that's their "job"), taking
responsibility for their actions, not blaming what they do on others.
2. Respect Others. Especially the parent, but also other adults, other kids,
etc.
3. Respect Yourself. Don't fall into peer pressure, don't do something you don't
want to in order to "fit in".
4. Live by the Golden Rule.
