I would teach them critical thinking. The fact that you (read
it in a book or newspaper, saw it on TV, saw it on the internet)
does not make it correct. Teach them how to evaluate an article
for correctness, look for biases, and understand the author's
perspective and credentials.

Besides authors, I would add: parents, teachers, politicians,
preachers, and...well...now that I think about it, everybody.

Think for yourself, and get yourself educated (by any means, not just
via schools). Keep an open mind, but don't be willing to swallow
something just because you hear it from an authority figure.
